Stewarding the Future of Sakala

A New Chapter is Here

Sakala has always been more than a collection of events or programs.

It is a community rooted in belonging, healing, and authentic connection—a place where people feel seen, supported, and invited to grow together.

As our community continues to evolve, we're also evolving how Sakala is cared for.

We're transitioning into a nonprofit so this community can be stewarded collectively, guided by shared values, sustained for the long term, and able to expand its reach.

Because we believe communities thrive when they're held by many—not carried by one.

Listening Before Leading

As we've dreamed about the future of Sakala, one thing has remained clear: we never want growth to come at the expense of what makes this community feel like home.

Before creating new structures or expanding what comes next, we intentionally spent the fall and winter of 2025–2026 listening. Through our Vision Room gatherings and conversations across the community, we wanted to understand what people cherished most about Sakala—what they hoped we'd protect, nurture, and carry forward as we grow.

The commitments that follow aren't just ideas we've come up with. They're rooted in the voices, experiences, and hopes of this community. They are our promise to steward Sakala with the same care, connection, and heart that brought us all here in the first place.

1. A Place That Feels Like Home

Sakala is, first and foremost, a place of belonging.

Again and again, people described it as feeling like home—a space where they're welcomed exactly as they are, deeply seen, and invited into genuine connection.

As we grow, protecting that feeling remains our highest priority.

How We're Bringing This to Life

The commitments you've just read didn't simply shape our values; they shaped how Sakala will be stewarded moving forward.

Rather than adopting a traditional top-down leadership model, we've designed a stewardship model rooted in shared leadership, collective wisdom, and intentional care.

This model is built around two interconnected stewardship bodies:

  • The Community Task Force, where community voices, ideas, and lived experience help shape Sakala's future.

  • The Stewardship Council, which provides governance, continuity, and long-term stewardship in partnership with the community.

As Sakala's Founder and Visionary Creator, Meghan's role is to steward the long-term vision, values, and heart of Sakala—supporting the ecosystem as leadership continues to be shared across the community.

Together, these roles create a living model of stewardship—one that balances participation, shared governance, and a clear vision for the future.

The visual below illustrates how these pieces come together to support Sakala's next chapter.

The Stewardship Council

The Community Task Force

The Stewardship Council is our decolonized board — a small, committed circle of stewards who help guide vision, care for the ecosystem, and hold long-term responsibility for Sakala’s growth and integrity.

The Task Force is our broader, community-rooted collective — a space for voices, ideas, and lived experience to be shared and heard. This group helps ensure that Sakala evolves in conversation with the community it serves, offering insight, feedback, and collaborative support along the way.
